CST 2 CST
Slow Cozy, an emerging synth-based bedroom pop band from Tulsa, Oklahoma, just released their debut single “CST 2 CST” on May 27th preceding the release of the “CST 2 CST” music video created in collaboration with Tulsa based graphic artist Lane Goza on June 3rd.
Recorded and produced by Logan Bruhn in his home studio in Tulsa, OK, “CST 2 CST” opens up with a funky punch, then settles into a vibe that can best be described as a windows-down drive on a summer night. Tazmen West’s lyrics paint the picture of a spontaneous road trip with a lover, laid back and playful. The chorus is met by the sounds of group clapping and a childlike piano melody suggesting taking the leap and throwing caution to the wind. “We can go, wherever you want babe” The track then takes us along through all the highs and lows, and reminds us that we’re all just on this trip together.
“The song was written about a new flame I’d been having. We were navigating and pushing through the difficult terrain of forming a relationship between ourselves” said lead singer Tazmen West. “A new love can be scary, unknown, unnerving, and uncertain. The thought of packing your bags and leaving old feelings behind for emotional growth turned me onto this idea…and this idea turned into a song.”
The music video released on June 3rd was created by Lane Goza who took inspiration from the Greek myth of Eurydice and Orpheus as well as the work of Ralph Bakshi. “The idea initially came from playing with the theme of travel. The ultimate travel being that between worlds…” Goza said. “The song seemed to me like a dreamy ode to traversing the world with the one you love. The road trip aspect is where the handycam idea came in. Even though no one really uses handycams anymore, I thought it was the perfect framing device to show the happy moments between the two.”
When asked about the style of the video, Lane continues to say “I really wanted to rotoscope, which is drawings over photos to make animation. I tried to test out different ways I can make that style look natural and real, and a big part of that was having the characters seen through the lens of different cameras that exist in their world. I used Google Earth to look up the background locations in order to give it some basis in reality as well. The flying scenes were from downtown Tulsa, and I remember trying to map out the flight path as accurately as I could.”
Slow Cozy is a five piece band out of Tulsa, Oklahoma that blends dreamy, synthy, and sometimes crunchy bits into a shimmery indie pop smoothie.
Before changing their style, sound, and eventually name, Slow Cozy was formerly known as Roots of Thought. The band formed while the group was in high school in 2010 as a psych-rock outfit, and over the years performed at Cain’s Ballroom, Rocklahoma, and opened for Flobots and Badfish amongst others. The band has since matured and decided to take on a new moniker to match the pop-oriented, straightforward approach to their music. Slow Cozy takes influence from artists like Tame Impala, The Weeknd, The Beatles, and Sports.
“We just felt that we had outgrown the name that we came up with when we were 17-year-old rockstar wannabes,” said guitarist Logan Meldrum. “It was time to grow up and own our music. Ironically, the new name and fresh start makes us feel like kids again.”
